Die Arbeitsgruppe „Optische Bildgebung“ befasst sich mit der Erforschung und Anwendung moderner, nicht invasiver Verfahren zur diagnostischen Visualisierung in der Kopf-Hals-Medizin. Im Zentrum steht die konfokale Laser-Endomikroskopie (CLE), eine Technologie, die eine hochauflösende Echtzeitdarstellung einzelner Zellen und oberflächlicher Gefäßstrukturen ermöglicht. Ziel der aktuellen Arbeiten ist es, mithilfe der CLE morphologische Merkmale von Karzinomen und deren Vorstufen im gesamten HNO-Bereich zu analysieren und verlässlich von gesunder Schleimhaut abzugrenzen. Hierzu wurden umfangreiche Bilddatensätze erhoben und mit histologischen Referenzbefunden verglichen, um charakteristische Muster verschiedener Gewebeveränderungen zu identifizieren. Auf dieser Grundlage wurden Bewertungskriterien entwickelt und validiert, die die Bildinterpretation in der klinischen Anwendung erleichtern sollen. Die CLE zeigt ein vielversprechendes Potenzial als ergänzende bildgebende Methode: Sie kann eine gezieltere Diagnostik ermöglichen, die Notwendigkeit invasiver Biopsien zu reduzieren und die Präzision operativer Eingriffe zu steigern.
